P90X VS CrossFit Review:Ever wonder about the P90X program? It’s basically CrossFit on a DVD with a trainer and some of the key elements removed. First a summary of the two programs.
CrossFit claims to be “Elite Fitness” and includes a variety of functional movements done at high-intensity. Functional movements are those that mimic real life like squatting, pushing things, pulling things, lifting things, etc. Examples of movements that are NOT functional would be bosu-ball crunches, leg-lifts, and bent-over rows as these are not helping you train for life. CF also focuses on all ten general physical skills, however the program spends more time on some skills and less on others.
P90X is a program designed to transform your body from regular to ripped in just 90 days. They don’t mention being “fit” because the general public doesn’t care about fitness and in marketing, aesthetics sells more DVDs. P90X has a 3-phase program that repeats in a 3-week on, 1-week off schedule. Phase 1 is muscle confusion, phase 2 is adaptation and growth, phase 3 is recovery. This cycle repeats for 90 days. They separate their workout dvds into abs, shoulders, back, legs, chest, biceps, etc. and throw in some kickboxing, cardio, stretching, and yoga workouts to mix things up. Altogether I have 17 P90X dvd workouts guided by Tony Horton.
Here’s a side by side comparison:P90XPros1. Easy to do at home2. Lots of different high-intensity exercises3. Less expensive than gym memberships (even 24-hour fitness who’s $20/month)4. Will get stronger quickly5. Well-rounded fitness program - cardio, yoga, kickboxing, abs, etc.Cons1. No strength component (all bodyweight exercises), focuses only on 1 metabolic pathway **HUGE problem!2. Boring after 3 weeks - takes 7 diff. exercises and repeats for 60 min with short “running in place” breaks.3. Annoying hearing the trainer yell for 60 min.4. Done alone5. MUST take their expensive supplements and eat a low-fat diet with pasta and other garbage carbs (diet is straight outta da 80’s)
CrossFitPros1. Done in a group with other people2. Wide-range of exercises3. Coaches to teach and watch you4. Not boring after 3 weeks5. Paleo diet, no need for expensive supplementsCons1. More expensive than dvds2. Competitive and intimidating3. Must be in decent shape or else it sucks big-time4. Doesn’t include stretching, yoga, kickboxing, etc.5. More complicated, more hardcore, and more advanced than most other programs6. Kinda like a cult
Summary: P90X is a better program for the general public. It’s easier to learn, less expensive, and includes many aspects of the crossfit program. The two programs are amazingly similar! CrossFit has a huge turnover ratio (read about the thousands who’ve quit CrossFit, or see our previous members photos) and P90X has an amazing track record of people who finish. However, I cannot see anyone who is serious about fitness doing P90X for more than 3 weeks. After 90 days who knows what to do with their program; the people who stick with CrossFit become Elite Athletes for life.
If you enjoy doing dvd workouts alone in your basement, CrossFit is not a program for you. P90X is a great program for anyone out of shape. CrossFit is only for the motivated, those who can handle mental challenges and push through. You can’t turn off our training when it gets tough…
